Visa Strengthens Its AI Leadership in Financial Services
Visa has named Adrija Banerjee Senior Director and Head of AI Practice for North America in a move to bolster its position as artificial intelligence becomes ever more central to financial services. The task for firms in this sector is not merely to put AI in place but to do so at scale, all the while upholding security, trust and regulatory standards.
Banerjee is well equipped for the job with over ten years’ worth of experience in fields ranging from machine learning and strategy consulting to risk management and digital transformation within financial services. Her arrival coincides with Visa’s ongoing efforts to roll out AI in areas such as payments, fraud prevention, enterprise operations and customer experience.
The company has put in place a global AI advisory practice to guide clients on the effective use of generative AI and other tools. With her deep background in financial services and transformation, Banerjee will add further heft to that agenda.
From American Express and McKinsey to Visa
Prior to joining Visa, Banerjee was a Director at American Express, where she was involved in AI and transformation work for the financial services industry. Before then she was with McKinsey & Company for close to seven years in leadership capacities covering everything from large-scale enterprise change to AI and risk management. Her earlier stints at Deloitte India’s US offices and ICICI Lombard have given her a broad perspective on consulting and insurance as well.
Such a mix of credentials is of particular import in the payments world, where any application of AI has to prove its business worth under exacting conditions of privacy, regulation and customer confidence.

What Banerjee Will Lead at Visa
In her new capacity, Banerjee is set to drive AI adoption through Visa’s North American client base and business. She will be responsible for formulating AI-led strategies and making sure investments in the technology yield tangible results. Part of her remit is to back the deployment of machine-learning and generative AI, find high-value opportunities for clients and ensure model-risk and responsible AI are given the attention they warrant.
It is a role that straddles the line between consulting, financial services and technology, three disciplines that are coming together as payment networks turn to AI to make sense of vast transaction flows and spot anomalies in real time.
Why AI Is Becoming Critical to the Payments Industry
When you are running one of the largest digital payments networks in the world, AI is a matter of efficiency and security. Whether it is for authorisation, cutting down false positives, or personalising the customer journey, the applications are clear.
Moving AI From Pilots to Secure, Scalable Deployment
Yet taking a technology from the pilot stage to production is not just about having an accurate model. There is a need for data controls, monitoring and accountability that financial institutions demand. As organisations look for a more repeatable and governed approach to AI, Banerjee’s track record in risk and enterprise transformation will be an asset.
Why North America Matters to Visa’s AI Strategy
This appointment is also indicative of how vital North America is to Visa’s consulting and AI plans. It is a crowded market with major banks, merchants and tech companies vying for advantage. For Visa, it is a sign that AI is now integral to what it offers. And for Banerjee, it is a chance to influence strategy across the wider payments landscape as the industry puts its experimental phase behind it in favour of something more secure and commercially sound.
