With the 2026 Whitley Award, Dr Barkha Subba has put a spotlight on a conservation story that is far larger than the small amphibian at its centre. The 41-year-old scientist from Darjeeling was honoured for her work in safeguarding the Himalayan newt, or salamander, an endangered creature of the Eastern Himalayas’ streams.

Subba’s methods are as much about people as they are about the species. By enlisting local communities to look after the wetlands and forest habitats the newt needs, she has taken a grassroots approach that is vital for the animal’s future.

The Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) bestows its awards, which have earned the moniker “Green Oscars,” at the Royal Geographical Society in London. This year Princess Anne presided over the ceremony where each recipient was given £50,000 to put towards their projects.

Who Is Dr Barkha Subba, the Conservationist Behind the Award?

As an executive member of the Federation of Societies for Environmental Protection in Darjeeling, Subba is well versed in the vulnerable ecosystems of the region. Her portfolio includes field surveys to map out habitats and awareness drives to make the case for the newt’s ecological value. But it is her community engagement that stands out; by involving residents in curbing habitat degradation from things like grazing or stream diversion, she gives them ownership of their environment.

Why the Himalayan Newt Is So Important to the Eastern Himalayas?

Listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, the Tylototriton himalayanus is native to India, Nepal and Bhutan. It is dependent on the cold, clean headwater streams of forested catchments. Lately, those systems have come under duress from hydropower development, road building and agricultural run-off, not to mention locals who may take the amphibians for food or traditional remedies. To protect the newt is to defend the freshwater and forest ecosystems that are home to much of the Himalayas’ biodiversity.

What the 2026 Whitley Award Means for Her Conservation Work

The Whitley Awards are designed to acknowledge mid-career talent from the Global South who can back up their science with on-the-ground action. In addition to the project funding, winners get media backing and the chance to learn from peers, with the possibility of further support via the Whitley Gold Award.

A Bigger Win for Community-Led Conservation in India

This year saw two Indians, Dr Subba and Parveen Shaikh, receive the accolade, a testament to the rise of locally driven conservation in the country. For Subba, the prize is validation of years spent in the hills of Darjeeling and a means to extend her monitoring and stewardship programmes. It also makes a point: that saving some of the planet’s more fragile species does not require the machinery of large institutions. Often it is the people in the community who know the land and what is happening to it that will step up to do the protecting.
