India’s artificial intelligence ecosystem is entering a new phase of growth, and global AI companies are racing to strengthen their presence in the country. In a major development, Anthropic – the AI company behind Claude – has appointed former Microsoft executive Sangeeta Bavi as Head of Sales for Digital Natives and Startups in India.

The move highlights Anthropic’s growing focus on India’s rapidly expanding startup and mid-market ecosystem, where businesses are increasingly integrating AI into products, operations, and customer experiences. With nearly a decade of experience at Microsoft, Sangeeta Bavi brings deep expertise in startup ecosystems, enterprise AI adoption, and technology partnerships – making her one of the most strategic hires for Anthropic’s India expansion plans.

Sangeeta Bavi Played a Key Role in Building Microsoft’s Startup Ecosystem in India

Before joining Anthropic, Sangeeta Bavi spent close to 10 years at Microsoft, where she became a well-known name within India’s startup and technology ecosystem.

One of her biggest contributions was helping build Microsoft’s startup business in India from scratch. During her tenure, she worked closely with founders, developers, and emerging businesses, helping startups access cloud infrastructure, technical support, and scaling opportunities through Microsoft’s ecosystem programs.

Bavi also played an important role in driving Azure OpenAI adoption for enterprise clients, well before generative AI became a mainstream business conversation globally. Her work positioned her at the center of cloud computing, enterprise technology, and AI transformation — an experience that aligns strongly with Anthropic’s ambitions in India today.

Over the years, she built strong relationships across the startup ecosystem, making her one of the most influential leaders in India’s enterprise-tech and startup landscape.

Anthropic Wants to Expand Claude’s Presence in India

At Anthropic, Sangeeta Bavi will focus on scaling Claude’s adoption among startups, digital-native companies, and mid-sized businesses across India.

Her responsibilities are expected to include strengthening enterprise integrations, building startup partnerships, expanding ecosystem collaborations, and helping more Indian businesses integrate Claude into their workflows and products.

Claude currently competes with some of the world’s leading AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s Llama. As competition in the AI industry intensifies, companies are no longer focusing only on technology capabilities – they are also investing heavily in ecosystem growth, enterprise relationships, and developer adoption.

Anthropic’s decision to bring in a leader with Bavi’s background suggests the company is taking a long-term approach toward building its India presence.

Why India Has Become a Priority Market for AI Companies

India is quickly becoming one of the most important global markets for artificial intelligence.

The country’s startup ecosystem, which includes over 50,000 startups, is rapidly adopting AI across industries such as fintech, healthtech, SaaS, e-commerce, education, and enterprise software. Businesses are increasingly using AI for customer support, automation, analytics, product development, content creation, and operational efficiency.

This has created a massive opportunity for global AI companies looking to scale.

As AI adoption grows, Indian startups are also seeking more flexibility in choosing platforms and models that suit their needs. That demand has intensified competition among companies like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Anthropic.

For Anthropic, strengthening its India leadership team is a strategic move to tap into one of the fastest-growing AI ecosystems in the world.

Experience Beyond Microsoft Adds to Bavi’s Industry Perspective

Sangeeta Bavi’s career extends beyond Microsoft’s enterprise ecosystem.

Before her time at the tech giant, she served as Chief Operating Officer at YourStory Media, one of India’s most recognised startup-focused media platforms. That role gave her extensive visibility into India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, startup culture, and founder networks.

She also worked as an advisor to Seafund, a deep-tech venture capital firm focused on emerging technologies including AI, robotics, and semiconductors.

This combination of enterprise technology, startup enablement, deep-tech investing, and founder ecosystem exposure gives Bavi a well-rounded understanding of how innovation is evolving in India.

What This Means for Indian Startups

For startups and digital-native businesses in India, Bavi’s appointment could lead to stronger access to Anthropic’s AI ecosystem and resources.

As Claude expands its footprint in India, startups may benefit from improved onboarding support, technical guidance, enterprise-ready integrations, and future ecosystem partnerships. The move could also create more competition in the AI market, giving founders additional options beyond OpenAI and Google models.

More importantly, it reflects how seriously global AI companies are now viewing India’s innovation economy.

AI is no longer a future trend for Indian startups. It is becoming central to how businesses build products, serve customers, and scale operations.

Anthropic’s India Bet Signals a Bigger Industry Shift

Sangeeta Bavi’s transition from Microsoft to Anthropic represents more than just a leadership appointment. It reflects the broader transformation happening across the global AI industry.

Today, AI companies are not only competing on model performance. They are competing on ecosystem strength, developer trust, enterprise relationships, and local market expansion.

With her experience in startup growth, enterprise AI adoption, and ecosystem building, Bavi brings exactly the kind of leadership Anthropic needs to strengthen Claude’s presence in India.

As the country’s AI ecosystem continues evolving, this appointment could become one of the most important strategic moves in Anthropic’s long-term India journey.
