How Aashka Goradia Turned a ₹50 Lakh Investment into a ₹1,300 Crore Beauty Brand

Aashka Goradia’s path from the screen to the boardroom is a case study in reinvention and entrepreneurial vision.

It tells the story of how she has taken a ₹50 lakh investment and made it into a beauty brand worth ₹1,300 crore.

To leave a career of which one is already fond and stable is no small matter. But then again, some of the finest examples of entrepreneurship are born from the willingness to put down what you have built and begin anew.

In 2020, the former television actress did just that. She put the entertainment industry behind her to co-found Renee Cosmetics with Ashutosh Valani and Priyank Shah. With only ₹50 lakh to their name at the outset, the three set about creating a brand for the modern Indian consumer.

One could have been content to be an endorser, but Aashka was intent on being a business owner. That is where the real work lay: in making the daily strategic calls, in getting to know the customer and in forging an identity for the company from the ground up. Her transition was not simply a change of profession but an entry into a world of its own challenges and uncertainties.

It is a move that speaks to a trend we are seeing more of in India, with public figures opting for an ownership stake in a startup rather than just putting their name to a product. As a co-founder, Aashka has had a hand in the culture and long-term strategy of Renee.

Renee Cosmetics has since become one of the fastest to rise in the Indian market, with a valuation of ₹1,300 crore, over $25 million in funding and revenues of ₹328.6 crore. The numbers are certainly impressive, but they are also a testament to the kind of digital-first thinking and innovation that can make a market leader of a startup.

    From Television to Entrepreneurship

The brand was conceived as a digital entity to tap into the country’s online shoppers. At the same time, it rode the wave of two industry changes: the push for vegan, cruelty-free offerings and the desire for ethical formulations without sacrificing style or quality.

With a range of premium lipsticks, 3D lashes and other novel makeup items, Renee has put forward a proposition that is as much about enjoyment as it is function. In a category as cut-throat as this one in India, the brand has distinguished itself not by price but through packaging and product quality.

Scaling a Beauty Startup Through Innovation

For any founder or business enthusiast, there is a lesson in Aashka Goradia’s experience. Reinvention is less about abandoning a past and more about having the eye to see opportunity where it is not obvious. From those initial ₹50 lakh to the present day, Renee’s growth is a result of steady, disciplined execution. With revenue of ₹328.6 crore and over $25 million in funding to its name, the brand has put numbers to the strong faith investors have in its long-term prospects.

Yet in India’s beauty sector, there is more to success than putting an appealing product on the shelf. It demands that a brand earn the consumer’s trust, be unrelenting in quality and innovation, and put in place sound manufacturing and distribution to keep pace with a market that does not stand still. Renee has managed all of this at speed, which speaks volumes about the robustness of its model and how well it is executed.

The company has set its sights on ₹550 crore in revenue, a clear sign the growth narrative is only just getting started. But Renee is not content to merely add to its catalogue; the aim is to solidify its standing as one of the country’s premier beauty brands.

    More Than Celebrity Branding

There is something distinctive about Aashka Goradia’s path that defies the usual celebrity-business formula. Public figures are wont to do an endorsement or a short term partnership, but few will shoulder the task of building a business from scratch.

Renee Cosmetics is evidence that while a good founder story will draw an eye, you need consumers to truly want your products for any growth to be sustainable. The company seems to have found that equilibrium through a strategy that is as customer-focused as it is innovative in its digital distribution. It is a lesson for any entrepreneur: visibility might get you noticed, but value is what keeps you in business.

A Reflection of India’s Changing Beauty Market

What Renee has accomplished is also indicative of a wider shift in the personal care industry here. The modern consumer is looking for brands with values, inclusivity and a sense of the new. Digital-first operations have been in a good position to deliver on that, able to build rapport online and adapt to preferences in real time. Newer entrants like Renee are making inroads against the old guard by providing a more personalised experience and products that stand out.

In understanding how people like to find and buy their beauty products as much as what they want to buy, Renee has put itself at the heart of the change.

    A Story of Reinvention

For Aashka Goradia, entrepreneurship has been an exercise in confident change. She has shown that leaving behind a television career was not an ending but the start of something much larger. With an eye for trends and no shortage of vision, she has overseen the creation of a firm that is redefining the landscape.

Her example is worth heeding for those contemplating a career pivot or an aspiring founder. From an initial outlay of ₹50 lakh to a ₹1,300 crore enterprise, her journey with Renee Cosmetics is testament to the fact that when purpose and persistence are applied to reinvention, extraordinary results follow.
